Why Isn’t My Wig Fitting Right?
You’ve just unboxed your gorgeous new USTAR unit, you’ve prepped your edges, but when you put it on... something feels off. Maybe it’s sliding back, bulging at the crown, or feels like it’s pinching your ears.
A poorly fitting wig doesn't just look "wiggy"—it can damage your natural hair and kill your confidence. Before you give up on the style, let’s troubleshoot. Here are the 5 most common reasons your wig isn’t sitting right and the 2026 pro-tips to fix them instantly.

1. Your Natural Hair "Foundation" is Too Bulky
The number one reason for a wig that looks "bumpy" or sits too high is the hair underneath. If your braids or wrap are too thick, the wig cap has nothing flat to grip onto.
-
The Fix: Aim for small, flat cornrows (braided toward the back) or a very sleek low bun. If your hair is short, use a high-quality USTAR wig cap to compress your natural hair as much as possible. A flat foundation = a flat, realistic install.

2. You Haven’t Adjusted the Interior Straps
Most USTAR wigs come with adjustable elastic straps at the nape of the neck. Many beginners forget these exist!
-
The Fix: If the wig feels loose or slides back, move the hooks inward. If it’s giving you a headache, move them outward.
-
Pro Tip: If you are between sizes, use a Wig Grip Band. It adds a layer of friction that keeps the wig in place even if the cap is slightly too large.

3. The Ear Tabs are Misaligned
If your wig is "lifting" at the sides or feels lopsided, check your ear tabs. These are the stiff pieces at the side of the wig that should sit right in front of your ears.
-
The Fix: Use both hands to feel the tabs on each side. They should be level. If one is higher than the other, your wig is crooked. Aligning these properly ensures the lace lays flat against your forehead.

4. Your Own Hairline is Peeking Through
A wig that sits too far back makes your forehead look unnaturally large, while a wig pulled too far forward looks "heavy" on the face.
-
The Fix: Your wig should sit exactly where your natural hairline begins.
-
Too far back? The wig will slide.
-
Too far forward? It will look fake.
-
The 4-Finger Rule: Generally, your hairline starts about four fingers' width above your eyebrows.
-

5. You Haven't "Molded" the Lace
Straight out of the box, the lace can sometimes be stiff or have a "fold" from shipping. This prevents it from hugging your scalp.
-
The Fix: Use a hot comb (on low heat for synthetic, or medium for human hair) to press the top of the wig flat. Using a bit of USTAR Lace Melting Spray or a silk head wrap for 10 minutes after putting the wig on will "melt" the lace to your head shape, ensuring a snug, custom fit.

Still Not Fitting? You Might Need a Different Cap Size.
While most of our wigs at USTAR are "average" size (which fits 90% of people), everyone's head is unique.
Measure Your Head: Take a soft measuring tape and wrap it around your circumference (from the front hairline, behind the ear, around the nape, and back).
Petite: 21"
Average: 22" - 22.5"
Large: 23"
