Why is my Wig Shedding

Why is my Wig Shedding

Understand the causes and learn how to keep your USTAR wig looking full and fabulous.

Finding a few strands of hair on your brush can be alarming. You’ve invested in a high-quality USTAR human hair wig, and you want it to last. While all wigs experience a very small amount of "natural" shedding over time, excessive hair loss is usually a sign that your maintenance routine needs a tweak.

In this guide, we’ll break down exactly why wigs shed and, more importantly, how you can stop it.

1. The Most Common Culprits of Shedding

To fix the problem, we first have to identify the cause. Here are the top reasons your wig might be losing its luster:

  • Excessive Tension & Brushing: Pulling too hard on tangles, especially when the hair is wet, can snap the delicate knots on a lace frontal or closure.

  • Product Buildup: Using heavy oils or sprays that aren't formulated for human hair wigs can weigh down the strands and cause them to slide out of the weft.

  • Dryness & Lack of Moisture: Unlike your natural hair, a wig doesn’t receive oils from your scalp. If the hair becomes brittle, it will break.

  • Friction During Sleep: Tossing and turning on cotton pillowcases creates intense friction that "yanks" hair from the cap.

2. Professional Tips to Stop the Shedding

At USTAR, we use reinforced wefts and premium 100% human hair to minimize shedding, but home care is the second half of the equation.

Seal Your Knots

If you are wearing a 13x4 or 5x5 HD Lace wig, the hair is hand-tied into the lace. Using a knot sealer spray after washing can help "lock" those knots in place, preventing them from loosening over time.

The "Bottom-Up" Brushing Method

Never start at the roots! Always use a wide-tooth comb or a dedicated wig brush. Start detangling at the very tips and slowly work your way up to the cap. This minimizes the tension placed on the lace.

Nighttime Protection: The Silk Secret

Never sleep in your wig without protection. We recommend:

  • Wrapping your USTAR wig in a silk or satin scarf.

  • Switching to a silk pillowcase to reduce friction-induced frizz and shedding.

3. Washing Without the Wear and Tear

How you wash your wig determines how long it stays full.

  1. Detangle FIRST: Always comb through the hair before it touches water.

  2. Use Lukewarm Water: Hot water can loosen the glue or knots in the cap.

  3. Squeeze, Don't Rub: When drying, gently pat the hair with a microfiber towel. Rubbing the hair vigorously is a one-way ticket to shedding.

USTAR Expert Note: For our vibrant styles, like the #350 Reddish Brown Body Wave or Hot Red Straight Frontal, use sulfate-free products to maintain both the color integrity and the strength of the hair strands.

4. When to Seek a Professional

If your wig has developed a "bald spot" or the shedding is localized to one area of the lace, it might be time for a repair. At USTAR, we prioritize durability, but normal wear and tear over 6–12 months is expected. Replacing your closure or frontal can often breathe new life into your favorite unit.
