Why is my lace wig curling or rolling under after I cut it?
The USTAR Guide to Preventing and Fixing Lace Rolling
You’ve just unboxed your new USTAR lace wig, carefully trimmed the lace to match your hairline, and then—frustration strikes. The edges of the lace start curling upward or rolling under, making that "invisible" hairline suddenly very visible.
Don't panic! This is a common issue, especially with high-quality, thin lace. In this guide, we’ll dive into exactly why this happens and, more importantly, how you can fix it to achieve that flawless, melted look.

3 Reasons Why Lace Rolls After Cutting
1. Cutting Too Close to the Hairline
In an effort to get the most natural look, many people trim the lace too close to the hand-tied knots. When there isn't enough "tension" or surface area left in the lace fabric, the edges lose their structural integrity and begin to curl.

2. Using Dull Scissors
If your shears aren't razor-sharp, they "chew" the lace rather than slicing it. This creates micro-frays at the edge of the mesh. As these frays dry or interact with your skin's natural oils, they contract, causing the lace to roll under.

3. The "Straight Line" Mistake
Cutting your lace in a perfectly straight line is a recipe for rolling (and it looks unnatural!). A straight edge creates a uniform line of tension that easily flips.

How to Fix and Prevent Lace Curling
The "Zig-Zag" Cutting Technique
Instead of a straight cut, use pinking shears or small embroidery scissors to cut in a tiny zig-zag or "wave" pattern. This mimics a natural hairline and breaks the tension of the lace, significantly reducing the chance of it rolling.
Use a Lace Sealer or "Fray Check"
If you’ve already cut the lace and it’s starting to roll, you can apply a tiny amount of specialized lace sealer or a fabric "fray check" solution to the very edge. This stiffens the microscopic fibers and keeps them flat.
Proper Melting with a Melt Band
In 2026, the "Melt Band" is a wig-wearer’s best friend. After applying your adhesive or glueless gel:
-
Lay your lace flat.
-
Tie a USTAR elastic melt band tightly over the hairline.
-
Leave it for 10–15 minutes. This "sets" the lace into the skin, preventing it from having the opportunity to curl or roll.
USTAR Pro Tip: If you prefer a glueless install, use a tiny bit of holding spray on a Q-tip and run it along the edge of the lace. This acts as a "weight" to keep the lace flat against your forehead.

Is It Time for a New Lace?
Sometimes, if the lace has been stretched out or "over-plucked," the rolling becomes permanent. If your current wig has seen better days, it might be time to upgrade to a USTAR HD Lace or Invisible Swiss Lace unit. Our lace is designed with a specific density to maintain its shape even after trimming.
