How to Measure Your Head for a Wig
Nothing ruins a new hair day faster than a wig that slides off because it’s too big or gives you a headache because it’s too tight. At USTAR, we believe your wig should fit like a glove—secure, comfortable, and undetectable.
The secret to that perfect fit? Knowing your numbers.
In 2025, buying wigs online is the norm, and getting your measurements right is the most critical step. Here is exactly how to measure your head for a USTAR wig in less than 5 minutes.

The secret to that perfect fit? Knowing your numbers.
In 2025, buying wigs online is the norm, and getting your measurements right is the most critical step. Here is exactly how to measure your head for a USTAR wig in less than 5 minutes.

Quick Guide: The 3 Measurements You Need
If you are in a rush, here are the three critical numbers you need to write down:
-
Circumference: The distance all the way around your hairline.
-
Front to Nape: The length from your forehead to the base of your neck.
-
Ear to Ear (Over Top): The length from one ear, over the crown, to the other.

What You Need Before You Start
Don't use a metal construction tape measure! It won't curve to your head shape accurately.
-
A flexible measuring tape (fabric or plastic).
-
A wig cap (optional, but recommended).
-
A mirror.
-
Your hair is prepped: If you have biological hair, flatten it before measuring. Braid it down or pin it flat against your head. If you measure over fluffy hair, your wig will be too big!

Step 1: The Circumference (The Most Important Number)
This is the "master number" that determines if you are a Petite, Average, or Large.
-
Place the end of the tape measure at the center of your front hairline.
-
Run the tape behind your ear, down to the nape of your neck (where your hairline ends).
-
Continue around behind the other ear and meet back at the center of your forehead.
-
Check the mirror: Ensure the tape is sitting flat and not twisted.
USTAR Standard: The industry average (and the size of 95% of our wigs) is 22.5 inches (57 cm).
Step 2: Front to Nape
This ensures the wig will sit at your natural hairline without bunching up at the top.
-
Place the tape at the center of your front hairline (the same starting spot as before).
-
Run the tape straight back over the top of your "crown" (the highest point of your head).
-
Stop at the nape of your neck where your skull meets your neck.
Step 3: Ear to Ear (Over Top)
This measurement is crucial for lace front and glueless wigs to ensure the ear tabs land in the right spot.
-
Start the tape at the top of your ear (where your glasses would sit).
-
Bring the tape up and over the top of your head.
-
End at the top of the opposite ear.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Mistake #1: Measuring over a ponytail. This creates a "bump" in the measurement that adds false inches. Always braid hair down flat.
-
Mistake #2: Pulling the tape too tight. The tape should be snug but not digging into your skin. If you pull it too tight, your wig will be uncomfortable.
-
Mistake #3: Ignoring the "Adjustable Straps." Remember, almost all USTAR wigs come with adjustable elastic bands at the nape. These give you about 1 inch of wiggle room!
