How to Fix a Lace Wig That’s Curling Under After a Cut
You’ve just achieved that perfect, custom cut on your USTAR lace wig. The style is flawless, the length is just right… and then, disaster strikes. That beautiful, crisp edge starts to curl under, making your wig look less natural and more like it has a mind of its own. Sound familiar? Don't panic! This is a super common issue, especially with delicate lace fronts and new cuts. But with the right techniques, you can easily fix a lace wig that’s curling under and restore its flawless, natural look.
At USTAR, we’re not just about providing premium lace wigs; we’re about empowering you with the knowledge to maintain them beautifully. Let's dive into why this happens and, more importantly, how to fix it!

Why Does Your Lace Wig Edge Curl Under After a Cut?
Before we fix it, understanding the "why" can help prevent it next time.
-
Tension & Pull: When cutting lace, especially if it’s not perfectly flat against a surface or head, the slight tension can cause the delicate material to want to retract or curl.
-
Heat Exposure: Sometimes, residual heat from styling tools (even if not directly on the lace) can slightly alter the lace’s structure, leading to a curl.
-
Moisture & Humidity: Just like natural hair, lace can react to environmental factors. Humidity can cause the fine fibers to curl.
-
Improper Cutting Technique: If the lace is cut too close to the hairline or with blunt scissors, it can stress the material, encouraging it to curl.
-
Product Buildup: Residue around the lace edge can make it stiff and prone to curling.

Your USTAR Step-by-Step Fix: Stop That Curl!
Here are the most effective methods to get your lace wig lying perfectly flat again.
Method 1: The "Flat & Gentle" Heat Approach (Our Go-To!)
This is often the quickest and most effective solution for most USTAR lace wigs.
-
Clean & Dry Lace: Ensure the lace around the curling area is clean and free of any adhesive residue or styling products. A gentle wipe with rubbing alcohol (on a cotton swab, avoiding the hair) can help. Make sure it's completely dry.
-
Secure Your Wig: Place your USTAR wig securely on a mannequin head or a wig stand. Ensure the lace edge is as flat as possible against the surface.
-
Low Heat & Press:
-
Option A (Flat Iron): Use a mini flat iron or the very edge of a standard flat iron on its lowest heat setting. Place a piece of parchment paper or a thin, silk scarf over the curling lace. Gently press the flat iron over the parchment paper, holding for just 1-2 seconds. Do NOT directly touch the lace with the hot iron.
-
Option B (Hair Dryer & Comb): Use a blow dryer on a cool to low heat setting. While blowing air, use the back of a fine-tooth comb or your finger to gently press and smooth the curling lace downwards onto the mannequin head.
-
-
Hold & Cool: After applying heat, continue to hold the lace flat against the surface until it completely cools down. This allows the lace to "set" in its flat position.
-
Inspect: Once cool, gently remove your hand and check the lace. It should now be lying flat.

Method 2: The "Setting Spray & Press" Technique
This method is excellent for a lighter curl or as a follow-up to Method 1.
-
Clean Lace: As before, ensure the lace is clean.
-
Light Spray: Lightly mist the curling lace edge with a strong-hold hairspray or a lace melting spray. Don't saturate it! Just a fine, even mist.
-
Press & Secure: Immediately after spraying, use the back of a comb, a clean cloth, or even your fingertips to gently press the lace edge down onto a flat surface (like your mannequin head or your forehead if wearing it).
-
Bandage Wrap (Optional but Recommended): For extra hold, you can wrap a silk scarf or a melting band around the hairline for 15-30 minutes, keeping the lace pressed down while it dries and sets.
-
Reveal: Remove the band, and your lace should be beautifully flat.

Method 3: The "Deep Condition & Reshape" (For Stubborn Curls)
If your USTAR wig's lace is particularly stubborn or feels a bit stiff, this can help relax it.
-
Gentle Wash: Carefully wash only the lace area (or the entire wig, if needed) with a mild shampoo and conditioner. Focus on softening the lace.
-
Rinse & Blot: Rinse thoroughly and gently blot the excess water from the lace.
-
Shape & Dry: Place the wig on a mannequin head. While the lace is still slightly damp, use your fingers to gently smooth and flatten the curling edges. You can even use small t-pins to very carefully pin the lace flat against the styrofoam head, being careful not to tear the lace.
-
Air Dry: Allow the wig to air dry completely in this flattened position. This helps the lace dry in the desired shape.

Prevention is Key: Tips for Cutting Your USTAR Lace Wig
To minimize future curling, keep these USTAR pro tips in mind:
-
Sharp Scissors ONLY: Always use dedicated, very sharp hair-cutting shears or fabric shears for cutting lace. Blunt scissors will fray and stress the lace.
-
Cut While Flat: Ensure the wig is on a mannequin head or a flat surface, with the lace pulled taut and flat, before you begin cutting.
-
Small Increments: Trim the lace in small, gradual increments rather than one big chop.
-
Leave a Small Edge: Don't cut the lace too close to the hairline. Leaving a tiny, barely visible margin (about 1/8 to 1/4 inch) can give the lace more integrity and prevent curling.
-
"Zig-Zag" or "Feathered" Cut: Instead of a blunt straight cut, a subtle zig-zag or feathered cut can sometimes make the lace edge blend more seamlessly and be less prone to curling.
