How to Care for Your Lace Front Wig
A high-quality lace front wig is an investment in your confidence. Whether you are rocking a USTAR deep wave unit or a sleek straight style, the secret to keeping that "fresh out of the box" look isn't magic—it's maintenance.
Lace fronts are more delicate than standard wigs because the lace material is sheer and hand-tied. If you treat it roughly, you risk bald spots and fraying lace.
Here is the professional breakdown on how to wash, dry, and store your lace front wig to keep it flawless for months.
1. Gentle Detangling (The Pre-Wash Step)
Never submerge a tangled wig in water. That is a recipe for matting!
-
The Tool: Use a wide-tooth comb or a paddle brush designed for wigs.
-
The Technique: Start from the ends and slowly work your way up to the roots.
-
The Lace Rule: Be extremely gentle near the lace frontal. Pulling too hard here can rip the lace or pull hair out of the knots, causing shedding.

2. Washing: The "Dip and Swish" Method
Scrubbing your wig like it’s your own scalp is a big "No." Friction causes frizz.
-
Cool Water Only: Fill a basin with cool or lukewarm water. Hot water can loosen the knots in the lace and damage the fiber.
-
Mix Shampoo: Dissolve a sulfate-free shampoo into the water before putting the wig in.
-
Dip and Swish: Submerge the wig and gently swirl it around. Let it soak for 5-10 minutes.
-
Rinse: Rinse with cool running water until the suds are gone.
USTAR Pro Tip: Do not apply conditioner to the knots (the root area on the lace). Conditioner loosens knots, which leads to shedding. Apply conditioner only from the mid-shaft to the ends.

3. Cleaning the Lace (Removing Glue & Gel)
This is the most critical step for lace fronts. Old glue buildup looks dirty and can ruin the lace visibility.
-
Use a Remover: Spray a wig adhesive remover or 91% isopropyl alcohol onto a cotton pad/soft toothbrush.
-
Dab, Don't Scrub: Gently dab the lace hairline to lift the glue. If you scrub too hard, you will fray the delicate edge of the lace.
-
Rinse Well: Ensure all remover residue is washed away.

4. Drying: Air is Best
Heat is the enemy of longevity.
-
Blot, Don't Wring: Place the wet wig in a microfiber towel and gently press to absorb excess water. Never wring or twist it.
-
Air Dry: Place the wig on a wig stand (or a tall bottle) to air dry.
-
Avoid Mannequin Heads While Wet: If you put a wet wig on a canvas block head, the cap might stretch out as it dries. Use a plastic wig stand that allows air to circulate underneath.

5. Storage: Keep it Safe
When you aren't wearing your USTAR crown, don't just throw it on the dresser!
-
Short Term: Place it on a wig stand to maintain the shape of the cap.
-
Long Term: If you aren't wearing it for a while, clean it, place it in a silk or satin bag to prevent friction, and store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight (sun can fade hair color!).
